Waverly, Conestoga and Raymond Central Teams Qualify for State Land Judging

Land judging teams from Prague, Waverly and Norris are headed for state competition after placing in the top tier at the East Central Land Judging Contest, held Oct. 8 in Butler County.

The annual Land Judging contests are regional field competitions where FFA students compete to identify soil characteristics and suggested land practices at four different sites chosen by a soil scientist. Students work individually but are scored in teams of four, and the top teams in each region advance to state competition in November.

Prague had the 1st place state-qualifying team of Jake Smaus, Sadie VanNorman, Hannah Schaefer and Nathan Sousek.The team scored 970 out of a possible 1,000 points. VanNorman also placed 7th in individual competition with 320 out of a possible 400 points, and Smaus came in 1st with 340 points.

In 2nd place with 931 points was the Waverly team of Jessica Smith, Rebecca Rose, Eric Houser and Logan Winter. Winter was 3rd in individual competition, scoring 336 points, and was also on a state-qualifying team in the 2008 contest.

The Norris team of Ali Ganow, Josh Kruger, Maci Lieneman and Samantha Rice placed 3rd with 910 points. Kruger also placed 4th in individual competition with 335 points.

All three of the top teams will go on to state competition near Wolbach on November 3.
Rounding out the nine purple ribbon winners in individual competition were Colby Kubik of East Butler in 2nd place (340 points), August Kliment of Raymond Central (5th place, 327 points), Tanner Miner of Conestoga (6th place, 322 points), William Salisbury of Conestoga (8th place, 315 points), and Tyler Heyen of Raymond Central (9th place, 312 points).

One hundred and sixty-eight students on 44 teams competed in the contest. Schools participating were Conestoga, East Butler, Mead, Norris, Prague, Raymond Central, Waverly, and Wilber-Clatonia. The contest was sponsored by the Lower Platte North Natural Resources District and the Butler County Natural Resources Conservation Service.
