October 8, 2014 - Hundreds of students are more equipped to take on life’s daily challenges in the world of natural resources now that they’ve competed in the 2014 East Central Land Judging competition in Butler County Wednesday. The competition tested nearly 200 students’ knowledge of soil types, proper land use practices, and other important topics.

The Lower Platte North Natural Resources District was pleased with the high turnout with so many high school students interested in the event. “We’ve had a lot of veteran ag teachers retire in our area schools over the past few years, so we’re very happy to see younger teachers stepping up and continuing to get their students involved in the contest,” said Lower Platte North NRD General Manager John Miyoshi. “Land judging teaches them skills they can use throughout their lives, and aligns very well with our soil conservation efforts.”

Four teams from the East Central area qualified for the State Land Judging Contest scheduled for October 22 in McCook. Seven students who placed in the top 10 individually but were not on one of the state-qualifying teams will also be able to compete in the individual division at State.

Milford teams took the top two spots in team competition, with the 1st place and top state-qualifying team of Kristan Longsine, Tanner Smith, Abbey Jeppesen, and Kyle Grieser scoring 855 points out of a possible 1,200. The 2nd place team included Ryan Tejral, Gage Grell, Andrew Hauder, and Cole Kremer, with 850 points. Milford also had the 4th place team, with team members Josie Borgman, Thomas Havlot, Ali Beran, and Trevor Roth scoring 837 points.
